A Sustainable Future
Tackling climate change offers a profound opportunity to create better lives for people. This gift helps people living in poverty to meet the challenges of a changing climate, and empowers Australian Christians to speak up and act for a more sustainable future.
How your gift helps
The poorest people on earth contribute the least to climate change – and yet they are often hardest hit by its consequences. But hope for a more sustainable future is growing. This gift supports TEAR’s partners who work with vulnerable communities as they adapt and build resilience to a changing climate. It also contributes to TEAR’s advocacy work with the church in Australia, empowering people to speak out, live differently and be leaders in the movement towards a more just and sustainable world.
Ranchi (pictured) is a pioneer for environmental care in her community in north-eastern India. Over the past 15 years, people in the region have suffered from unpredictable rainfall, drought, failing crops and struggling livestock. These pressures have led to shrinking livelihoods, migration, malnutrition and burdens of hopelessness for farming families. But TEAR’s partner EFICOR, who’ve worked in the region since 2012, are helping local people like Ranchi to adapt to the changing climate through adaptive agriculture techniques, water harvesting, women’s empowerment and sustainable livelihoods. Over 2000 households in 20 villages are experiencing the positive impacts of this project, resulting in a decrease in migration and encouraging increases in crop yields and health measures.
Through participation in her local Village Watershed Committee (VWC) (community groups formed and supported by EFICOR), Ranchi has developed a keen interest in trees and plants, and has taken action to help her community respond to the challenges of a changing climate. As a personal response to the environmental degradation she’d seen in her community, Ranchi pledged to plant 25 trees on her farmland over the year. Knocked back on her first application for saplings from the local government, due to having only a small area of land and limited resources to work with, Ranchi persisted with her plans. She mobilised her fellow members of the VWC and together they wrote a formal application for support from their local office. To her surprise, their request was approved – and not only did Ranchi receive 20 plants, but eight of the other VWC members did too! With EFICOR’s support, and Ranchi’s encouragement, a growing number of people in the community are finding new and sustainable ways to care for themselves, the environment, and future generations.
