Health and Nutrition

Health and Nutrition

Many children around the world suffer unnecessarily from diseases that are preventable and treatable. This gift provides children and families with access to effective care to help them grow strong and stay healthy, as well as education about nutrition, health and hygiene.

How your gift helps

For families in the port city of Beira, Mozambique, poor health, preventable and water-borne diseases and child mortality are too often part of normal life. But this is changing, thanks to TEAR’s partner, Oasis Mozambique, who is empowering local women to be leaders in the transformed health of their families and communities.

At the heart of Oasis’ Community Health and Empowerment Program, Care Groups are led by Mother Leaders (local women nominated by the community) who meet monthly with around 10 neighbours, sharing training in hygiene promotion, critical illnesses, respiratory disease, reproductive health and child health. The members of these Care Groups are active in passing on what they’ve learnt to their families and the wider community: in the past year, group members organised nine community health campaigns, reaching around 11,000 people.

Accessible and timely health information can sometimes be the difference between life and death, as local Beira woman Lucia knows only too well. When her youngest daughter Diolina was 9 months old, she contracted a serious case of diarrhoea – a preventable disease that can be fatal for young children. Lucia spent a significant amount of income taking Diolina to a traditional healer, but her condition continued for the following two months. It wasn’t until an interaction with one of Oasis’ Mother Leaders that Diolina’s health turned a corner. The Mother Leader invited Lucia to a training and awareness session, where she learnt about prevention and treatment for diarrhoea. She was encouraged to take Diolina straight to the hospital, where she was given immediate care at no cost. Lucia shared the health training information with her family, who are now healthy and happy, and know where to find help when they need it.

About our partner

They work in partnership with their local community, helping them to respond to the poverty issues around them. TEAR supports Oasis' Manga Loforte Community Health and Empowerment Project, which seeks to improve the health and nutrition of the community and help women improve their livelihood options and participation in their community.
