Description

Safeguarding a community. The gift of disaster preparedness contributes to community-based initiatives like disaster awareness education, as well as risk reduction measures like protecting homes from flooding and making plans to evacuate vulnerable people.

How your gift helps

The gift of disaster preparedness contributes to community-based initiatives like disaster awareness education, as well as risk reduction measures like protecting homes from flooding.

In Bihar, a state in Northern India, many villages are located in a fertile agricultural area, but some of the land is prone to flooding. TEAR's partner Muneer is working with communities here to help empower them to be better prepared for floods and other natural disasters when they occur.

Muneer has supported the community to form their own Village Disaster Mitigation Task Forces, organised training for these task forces and provided them with basic emergency supplies like first aid kits, life jackets, ropes and torches.

As part of the training, task force members talk about what can happen when a flood arrives, and map out the best ways to evacuate the community. Without whiteboards and computers, the mapping is done on the ground with twigs and sprinkled flour to sketch the village, as well as leaves (symbolising gardens) and corn seeds (symbolising houses). This exercise helped them visualise the residential areas, roads, rivers, rice fields, and evacuation zones in the event of floods.

So far, 13 villages in the project area have been trained in basic disaster preparedness, making them more able to support their community in a disaster and help to save lives.

Your gift of disaster preparedness is contributing to projects like this one and making a difference in the lives of those facing poverty and marginalisation.

About our partner

The Muneer Social Welfare Society is a Delhi-based Christian development organisation that responds to the needs of the poor and marginalised through projects that include family planning and health education, adult literacy and vocational training, disaster preparedness, and micro-finance through self-help groups. The word 'muneer' is derived from an Urdu word meaning 'light house', symbolising its work to be Christ's light in the world.
