It’s hard to believe, but 3.6 billion people around the world lack access to adequate toilets. Tearfund’s partners work with communities to construct toilets, handwashing facilities and other infrastructure. The result: improved health and hygiene, as well as safety and dignity.

These girls attend one of the 44 community schools in Zambia where students are enjoying better access to water and sanitation, with support from Tearfund’s partner Reformed Open Community Schools (ROCS). Through seemingly simple measures like clean, sturdy new toilet blocks, handwashing taps and training in sanitation, the incidence of diseases like diarrhoea is being reduced, and school attendance is improving.
