Pre-School Classes

Pre-School Classes

Attending pre-school helps children from marginalised backgrounds become ready to thrive in primary school. They get to socialise with other children, build confidence, and start learning. It also demonstrates to their families the importance of education.

How your gift helps

Community schools making a difference in Pakistan

Kanesha has a very good reason to smile! She is one of a small number of children in rural Pakistan experiencing the wonder of learning before she goes to primary school. TEAR’s partner, the Anglican Diocese of Hyderabad, has a vision for more children to experience pre-school and, with your help, is expanding its Primary Education Project (PEP).

Millions of children in rural areas in Pakistan don’t make it to school, let alone pre-school, due to government schools being few and far between. PEP is helping to meet this need by establishing 75 self-supporting community schools. This year over 4,500 children are receiving the gift of primary school education, many of whom would have missed out.

In addition, local communities play a central role in the project, setting up, managing and maintaining their schools. Each school has a management committee made up of local men and women who ensure that fees are paid, teachers are supported and facilities are maintained. This sustainable model of community ownership is facilitated by PEP’s field team who provide ongoing teacher training, and work with school management committees and women’s groups to build leadership and advocacy skills.

Pre-schools give children a great head start

Now PEP is turning its attention to pre-schools for 3-5 year olds. Some children in this age group tag along to school with older siblings anyway, but many remain at home once they become school-age to help their parents with home duties or work in the fields. Experiencing early childhood learning helps create positive connections between parents and schools and easier transitions into primary schooling. It is also hoped that this will also help to boost the numbers of girls entering and staying in school.

Kanesha’s pre-school is a pilot that’s been added to an existing community school and she and her classmates are thriving. They benefit from educational games and introductions to the alphabet and numbers. PEP’s leader Lilian Charles says “we are not only providing a basic education for every child, but also educating the whole family through them.” Starting the journey of learning with pre-schoolers helps to develop skills and confidence to become change makers in their communities in the future.
