The Afghanistan we hear about in the news is one of conflict and insecurity, but for the people living there, there is much more to the story. Many are struggling with basic issues like finding clean water to drink or having access to adequate sanitation.
According to the World Health Organisation, Afghanistan’s health status is one of the worst in the world. Health indicators like maternal and child mortality are three to five times higher than in neighbouring countries.
Amidst the many challenges, there are good news stories to be found. Stories of ordinary people whose lives are being transformed and filled with hope and life through the work of TEAR Australia’s partners in Afghanistan.
TEAR Australia works with, and helps to fund, five partner agencies in Afghanistan who between them have spent decades working with communities that have endured a wide range of unimaginable conditions. These partners work in such diverse areas as: water and sanitation, mental health, women’s empowerment, renewable energy, improving the lives of those with disabilities and helping people develop a sustainable livelihood like a small business. Our partners work in harsh and challenging environments, reaching out to the most poor and marginalised, and bring optimism and empowerment to their lives.
Their commitment is an inspiration; their work brings hope; and lives are being changed.
